Job Description:

Job Purpose: Responsible for collection of admissions fees and donations, as well as distribution of maps and other promotional materials: answers visitor questions and provides outstanding guest experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collects admissions fees.

  • Operates a computer terminal and records discount information, separately tracking each coupon or promotion.

  • Issues receipts to each guest and makes change.

  • Balances and clears terminal and counts all fees received for the day.

  • Greets all guests with a cheerful and helpful attitude, answers questions, and provides information.

  • Keeps work station and surrounding area clean throughout the day. The ticket booth is to be cleaned and restocked at the end of the shift. Cleaning the booth will include but is not limited to emptying trash, cleaning the windows and counters, and sweeping/mopping the floor.

  • Reports to Security all suspicious-looking individuals trying to enter Zoo grounds.

  • Must be aware that balloons, roller blades, roller skates, bikes, skateboards, glass items, straws and lids are not permitted on Zoo grounds. Guests must wear shoes at all times.

  • May be asked to carry small boxes. Some lifting, bending, standing, and sitting will be part of the daily routine.

  • May occasionally be assigned to assist in other operational departments such as Rides.

  • Must wear proper attire for the Admissions Department, including name badge, Zoo uniform shirt and approved pants or shorts, shoes and socks. Some work will be outdoors and will require the staff member to dress accordingly.

  • Must become knowledgeable in the area of Zoo Memberships, including selling Zoo Memberships to guests.

Experience and Skills:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to deal courteously with the public and Zoo staff and to develop and maintain harmonious relationships with other employees.

  • Ability to efficiently complete work in prescribed manner following a brief training period.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to handle cash, credit cards and checks accurately.

  • Ability to keep records of coupons and other promotional materials.

  • Ability to make change and to perform simple arithmetic calculations with accuracy and with reasonable speed.

Typing skills are required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education and experience level required:

  • Sufficient education to demonstrate the ability to read instructions and to perform elementary arithmetic calculations.

  • High school diploma

  • Zoo or hospitality industry-related experience or interest is a plus.

  • 3 to 5 years of cashier work preferred.

  • Experience dealing with the public.

  • Experience with computers is preferred.

Driving Requirements

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Long periods of standing or sitting are required; staff member may be asked to lift small boxes with some bending and stooping.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: (Employee is expected to work outside 50% of the time and must be comfortable working in cold and hot weather conditions.)
