Job Title: Assistant Project Manager

Department: Facilities & Construction

Reports to: VP, Facilities & Construction

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Status: Full-time

Job Purpose: The Assistant Project Manager will assist the Vice President, Facilities & Construction in ensuring the care and upkeep of Zoo Atlanta’s buildings, grounds, habitats, pathways, and public event spaces. This position will assist and provide day to day support including coordination, communication, and quality control with Facilities department team operations departments such as Maintenance, Horticulture and for the contracted vendor for Janitorial & Grounds Quality Services. The position will assist with the Facilities work order system (Asset Essentials) and assist from a Facilities coordination side for Zoo and Savanna Hall events including quality and assurance over the set-up & tear down schedule.

This position will also provide support as needed for Zoo department level and capital construction projects. Additionally, responsibilities will occasionally include developing and implementing projects, schedules and budgets related to care and upkeep, as well as new construction projects, for Zoo Atlanta buildings, habitats, grounds, pathways, and event spaces.

This position will frequently interface with other Zoo Atlanta management staff including animal curatorial staff, veterinarians, and at times, senior management staff regarding safety issues, animal habitat issues, as well as infrastructure, equipment and needed repairs. The Assistant Project Manager will also be responsible for making critical decisions and communications in the absence of the VP, Facilities & Construction.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta’s Vision, Mission and Values statement.
  • Ensures the highest quality care and upkeep of Zoo Atlanta buildings, habitats, grounds, pathways, landscapes and event spaces from a general cleanliness, maintenance, and upkeep perspective to ensure superior guest satisfaction and safety.
  • Assist the Maintenance, Horticulture managers with coordination related to general and specialized repairs & maintenance, service including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and custom fabrication or site service work as needed.
  • Assists Grounds Quality - Janitorial Services with initiating, developing, and implementing projects related to cleaning, care and upkeep of the Zoo Atlanta buildings, grounds, pathways, and event spaces from a general cleanliness and upkeep perspective.
  • Provide project management support and assistance through communication, scheduling, and site coordination with contractors. Assists & develops scopes of work, schedules, budgets, and coordinates all activities including work during normal and after closing hours as needed.
  • Assists with quality control on all Zoo Events including attending pre-planning, logistics and coordination meetings on behalf of the Facilities team as needed. Ensures proper coordination and communication between the Zoo Atlanta catering contractor and Events set-up contractor to ensure that all preliminary & scheduling needs for event set-up, tear down and clean up are met & performed at a highest quality standard.
  • Assists with the Facilities work order software package as needed. Duties include, assisting with entering/closing work orders as needed, building equipment & location databases and other data entry as needed, generating reports, and coordinating work order needs & priorities for other Zoo departments.
  • Assist the VP, Facilities & Facilities team managers & Security management team to ensure Facilities team members maintain and adhere to Zoo Atlanta safety policies and procedures. Assists with identifying potential safety issues on-site.
  • Assist Facilities teams as needed with contractor procurement, material and supplies inventory, ordering for consumables, equipment, and tools. Incudes securing cost estimates, proposing budgets and ordering material according to zoo policies and procedures. Strives to meet or exceed the Zoo Atlanta 35% MWBE or DBE spending goals.
  • Assists the Maintenance & Horticulture Managers and VP, Facilities with ongoing communication with the Zoo operations and management teams as well as the senior leadership team (SLT) for important updates & projects.
  • Assists the Maintenance Manager and VP Facilities with creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and makes recommendations for the capital budget.
  • Actively participates in Zoo-wide organizations and professional organizations.
  • Any other miscellaneous projects/assignment assigned by Zoo Atlanta’s Facility management team.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Zoo Atlanta is open to the public 363 days out of the year, therefore, all positions at Zoo Atlanta may require employees to work some weekends, holidays and evenings.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in working in a team-oriented environment with a strong customer service attitude.
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in an operations role in a dynamic fast paced organization, institution, multi-acre campus or service team operation.
  • Should have a basic knowledge in a minimum of one or more of the following key areas: mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding and/or other custom fabrication, automation & controls systems, auto repair.
  • Experience working in a public zoo, aquarium, water park or equivalent facility including a general knowledge of operations related to terrestrial animals is highly desirable but not required.
  • Must have above average computer skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including PowerPoint is a must. Experience with a PDF markup tool such as Adobe or Bluebeam is a plus. Ability to learn (CMMS) Computerized Maintenance Management Software is a plus.
  • Must be able to work a flexible weekly & weekend schedule including working a combination of day, evening and overnight shifts if required.
  • Must have outstanding communication skills. Must be able to communicate well both orally & written. Must be able to generate operations & maintenance reports using email, spreadsheets and word documents.
  • Must have excellent leadership, organizational and decision-making skills.


  • High school diploma required.
  • A four-year college degree or equivalent technical school certificate is preferred but not required.
  • Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
    • PMP certification is desirable but not required.
    • FMP certification is desirable but not required.
  • Driving Requirements: Must have a valid Georgia Driver’s License. (All employees that drive a Zoo vehicle/cart/operate a Ride (train, carousel, etc) must consent to a MVR verification that is acceptable per Zoo Atlanta’s auto liability insurance carrier’s guidelines to perform this function).


  • Physical ability to be able to life at least 50 pounds repetitively, bending lifting etc.


  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Employee is expected to work outside more than 50% of time, must be comfortable working in cold and hot weather conditions.
