Job Description:

Job Purpose: The Maintenance Technician II with specialization in Welding/Fabrication plays a part in maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure at the zoo, ensuring a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for both visitors and animals. The role is responsible for the maintenance, installation, and repair of metal structures, exhibits, and facilities within the zoo. This role provides skilled welding and fabrication support, conducting maintenance, and repairing exhibits, equipment, and infrastructure. Additionally, the role will assist in planning projects, including the development of new exhibits and capital improvements for the Zoo.

This position will frequently interface with other Zoo Atlanta management staff including animal curatorial staff, veterinarians, and at times, senior management staff regarding safety issues, animal habitat issues, as well as infrastructure and equipment adjustments and needed repairs.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and weld structures, enclosures, and exhibits according to design specifications and safety standards.
  • Provide routine scheduled maintenance.
  • Conduct regular inspections of existing structures, exhibits, and facilities.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance as needed to ensure the longevity and safety of the infrastructure.
  • Work closely with the management to implement new projects and improvements.
  • Collaborate with other departments to address specific fabrication needs.
  • Create and follow maintenance schedules and checklists with supervisor.
  • Propose innovative solutions for improving exhibits, structures, and facilities.
  • Help prepare budget for equipment replacement.
  • Provide scheduled and emergency exhibit maintenance or repair.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines, ensuring that all welding and fabrication activities meet industry standards and regulations. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action, and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
  • Demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Must be able to work weekends, late evenings on occasion, and holidays.
  • Must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta’s Vision, Mission and Values statement.
  • Any other miscellaneous projects/assignment assigned by Zoo Atlanta’s Facility Maintenance management team.

Experience and Skills:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and Skills

  • Zoo Atlanta is open to the public 363 days out of the year, therefore, all positions at Zoo Atlanta may require employees to work some weekends, holidays and evenings.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in working in a team oriented environment.
  • 2-3 years’ experience as a Welder/Fabricator, preferably in a similar environment.
  • Proficiency in welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and arc welding.
  • Strong knowledge of metal fabrication and construction materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Attention to detail and precision in fabrication work.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to established protocols.
  • Ability to work independently as well as to work and collaborate as a team member.
  • Must have above average computer skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products is a must. Experience using computerized maintenance management software is a plus.
  • Must be able to work a flexible weekly & weekend schedule including working a combination of day and evening shifts if required.
  • Must have outstanding communication skills. Must be able to communicate well both orally & written.

Education:
  • High school diploma required.
  • A four-year college degree or equivalent technical school certificate is preferred but not required.

Driving Requirements: Must have a valid Georgia Driver’s License. (All employees that drive a Zoo vehicle/cart/operate a Ride (train, carousel, etc) must consent to a MVR verification that is acceptable per Zoo Atlanta’s auto liability insurance carrier’s guidelines to perform this function).

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Physical ability to be able to life at least 50 pounds repetitively, bending lifting etc.
    • Must be able to perform work wearing personnel protective equipment. Including but not limited to the following: rain gear, chemical protective clothing, supplied air and air purifying respirators, safety harness, fire resistant coveralls, hard hat, ear plugs and safety glasses.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
    • Employee is expected to work outside more than 50% of time, must be comfortable working in cold and hot weather conditions.
